Through His Eyes

Don't become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You'll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.Rom.12:2 (MSG) Then you can see things through His eyes.

What's Up With Liberal Christianity? #1

How does one become a liberal Christian?

Would liberal Christian be an Oxymoron or is it possible for someone to even be a liberal-Christian?

Think about it. In the next posts I will be dealing with this subject. Your input will be greatly appreciated. I will be quoting an atheist and what he says about Christian Liberals and I will be quoting and commenting on Dallas Willard's Divine Conspiracy among others.

What does someone who professes to be a liberal-Christian who belives in a liberal Christian Theology do for or against the great commission?

Can a liberal-Christian be a disciple of Christ or an apprentice to Jesus?

Please be respectful of others in your response.

Well... I live on the conservative side of Michigan right now. It's said that the other side of the state is more liberal. Then again, we're mainly talking politics here.

Which I think the the problem. Too often we tend to skew our faith through our other lens options. I always thought that central to everything was our faith and the rest of our lives needed to be in flux around that.

So I might this year be a bit more conservative in my faith, whereas next year I might be a bit more liberal. The catch is to not be either, though, but to strive to hang around the middle.

The problem is that like one side of a magnet we often get close to balance then repel away into a new position. The goal is to keep pushing in, even though our humanity repels us from fully connecting with a God whom we will never understand and a Bible we may never fully digest.

And that's all I have to say about that.

Can someone be a liberal Christian? No. I think that is impossible.

In my opinion there are two goal posts, one at each end of the field. One is right and the other is wrong. The liberal mindset will tell you that there is a whole playing field of gray area between those two posts. But there isn’t. Our acts, our thoughts, and our deeds are good or bad, right or wrong. There is no middle ground.

I think that is a lot of the problem we see today. Even though many of our elected officials claim to be Christians, they make choices for our nation that are terribly wrong because they are trying to play on that liberal gray playing field.

You can’t be Christian and worldly, you can’t strive to be Christ-like and at the same time be freethinking, you can’t serve two masters.

Just my opinion. :)

Thanks for your opinion Christi

You are right on with the gray. The devil does not hit normal every day people with black. The difference in black (sin) and white is obvious. We are repelled by black. Most people, even non-believers can see black and are uncomfortable with it. The way the great deceiver, the father of lies works is he tries to take everything towards gray.

Look at our media today. There are situations, stories, and pictures on TV that were obviously black even ten years ago. Example: When Sex in the City came out it was too black to be on the major networks. Now a show that would have been just as black when Sex aired, "Desperate Housewives" has moved way out of black into gray and is a favorite show even among Christians.

So obviously one way to make people believe that liberal is an accepted form of Christian Theology is to say "gray is OK."

While people know there should only be black and white, they feel the restrictions of that idea and rebel. We often times give into the flesh which calls us to the grey like a horrible alarm.Sometimes I wonder when the lines became smeared together that produces things like "Desperate Housewivies or sex in the city".

Most Christians spend most of their time and energy trying to figure out how far they can go away from obeying Jesus and still feel ok with being Christian. All it takes is baby steps daily. The sting of sin goes away a little at a time.

As a Jesus Apprentice we should be going in the opposite direction. What can I do today to be closer to Jesus today?

i like that term "Jesus Apprentice" ... if we would only consciously strive to be that ... if only "i" would strive to be more like Him ...

it sure is a daily choice! ... and it gets more and more difficult to make, because even other Christians question a person who goes "too far" with depriving themselves of a tv show, music, or a way of dress ...

good points you all have made ...

I'm wondering if this is an American thing. Isn't the point actually to be a Christian - to go out and make disciples?

There's a lot of politics in Christianity today - not necessarily a bad thing - but the disagreeing and pulling each other down for the sake of it - well it isn't very encouraging is it?

I liked a lot of the ideas here :)

sounds like you need to make it very clear you are not referring to political liberalism

Thanks Lorna and Kerry. I am not talking about politics. Unfotunately in America, because the majority of people profess to be believers, the religion card is played in politics when though there is a benefit.

It has become a major part of politics because atheists, and people who call themselves liberal are trying to pull Christ out of government and keep Him in the Sunday morning church setting.

Another problem with liberal Christianity, is that a liberal does not believe Christianity should be a life style, it should stay in the church.

The death of Jesus is the single most profound moment in the history of the world. To ignore God's willingness to die a criminal's death out of love and concern for our redemption is to ignore the fundamental root of Christian faith. Although I feel it should be said that to celebrate the risen Christ and to spread the good news is our fundamental duty as servants to our Lord.
